Phylogenetic niche conservatism and variations in species diversity–climate relationships

چکیده

Although contemporary climate has been identified as one of the major determinants large-scale species diversity patterns, its effect on greatly varies among clades. Understanding drivers variation in diversity–climate relationships (DCRs) across clades, which is critical for developing general mechanisms underlying effects remains a current challenge. Using newly compiled distribution data 914 Rosaceae China and dated genus-level phylogeny, we first assessed DCRs entire family, two growth forms (woody versus herbaceous), each genus separately, then explored different We found that significantly differed between woody herbaceous plants genera this family. Closely related had more similar patterns than expected. Both ancestral niches discrepancy explained variations DCR slopes with high explanatory power, indicating niche conservatism DCRs. Our study suggests driver enhances our understanding patterns.

Phylogenetic niche conservatism, phylogenetic signal and the relationship between phylogenetic relatedness and ecological similarity among species.

Ecologists are increasingly adopting an evolutionary perspective, and in recent years, the idea that closely related species are ecologically similar has become widespread. In this regard, phylogenetic signal must be distinguished from phylogenetic niche conservatism. Phylogenetic niche conservatism results when closely related species are more ecologically similar that would be expected based ...

Phylogenetic comparative approaches for studying niche conservatism.

Analyses of phylogenetic niche conservatism (PNC) are becoming increasingly common. However, each analysis makes subtly different assumptions about the evolutionary mechanism that generates patterns of niche conservatism. To understand PNC, analyses should be conducted with reference to a clear underlying model, using appropriate methods. Here, we outline five macroevolutionary models that may ...

Niche conservatism above the species level.

Traits that enable species to persist in ecological environments are often maintained over time, a phenomenon known as niche conservatism. Here we argue that ecological niches function at levels above species, notably at the level of genus for mammals, and that niche conservatism is also evident above the species level. Using the proxy of geographic range size, we explore changes in the realize...

Speciation and ecology revisited: phylogenetic niche conservatism and the origin of species.

Evolutionary biologists have often suggested that ecology is important in speciation, in that natural selection may drive adaptive divergence between lineages that inhabit different environments. I suggest that it is the tendency of lineages to maintain their ancestral ecological niche (phylogenetic niche conservatism) and their failure to adapt to new environments which frequently isolates inc...

Phylogenetic niche conservatism and the evolutionary basis of ecological speciation.

Phylogenetic niche conservatism (PNC) typically refers to the tendency of closely related species to be more similar to each other in terms of niche than they are to more distant relatives. This has been implicated as a potential driving force in speciation and other species-richness patterns, such as latitudinal gradients. However, PNC has not been very well defined in most previous studies. I...
